A Weekend Immersed in Jewelry Making at 92Y

If you’re passionate about jewelry making classes and are eager to try something intricate and culturally rich, a weekend jewelry making workshop focused on Portuguese filigree is an experience not to miss. I recently spent two days at 92Y in NYC exploring this ancient and detailed craft under the guidance of a skilled instructor, Natalie Aresta-Katz, who brought expertise and enthusiasm to the class.

The jewelry design class spanned a Saturday and Sunday in October, offering a deep dive into the traditional art of Portuguese filigree. Known for its roots in ancient civilizations, Portuguese filigree is characterized by delicate, lace-like patterns woven with precision and artistry. This style of jewelry making has been passed down through generations in Portugal and often includes graceful, swirling designs or flower motifs, requiring careful manipulation of fine silver or gold wire to create patterns that appear light and intricate.

Adding a bit of star power to the art of Portuguese filigree, actress Sharon Stone has proudly worn the iconic Coração de Viana pendant, a traditional Portuguese heart crafted using delicate filigree techniques. Gifted to her during a visit to Portugal, this pendant represents more than just an accessory; it symbolizes love, faith, and the heritage of northern Portugal, where the heart design originates. Known as the “Heart of Viana,” this piece has become a modern symbol of Portugal, celebrated for its intricate craftsmanship and its cultural ties to the Minho region.(1) Stone’s choice to wear this piece adds international visibility to the centuries-old art of Portuguese filigree, highlighting its elegance and timeless appeal.

The Journey Uptown and the Space

Living in central NJ, I needed to rely on public transportation to get to NYC for my class at 92Y. Once I arrived at Penn Station, I planned to take a couple of subways up to 92nd and Lexington. Unfortunately, the Q train wasn’t running, leaving me scrambling to find an alternative route. Worried about missing any part of the class, I opted to hail a cab, which turned out to be a pricey $30 ride. Despite this transportation hiccup, getting to the 92Y on time was well worth the extra effort.

Upon arrival, I found the jewelry studio was well-appointed with the essential tools needed for the class. Although some tools showed signs of wear, we had what we needed for the course. The class required specialized wire and fine powder solder, which the teacher supplied, so there was no need to worry about bringing extra tools and materials from home. The space was accommodating and well-organized, allowing for focused work and easy access to everything necessary for our filigree creations.

Dynamic Instruction and Hands-On Learning

Natalie, the instructor for this course, was young, dynamic, and skilled with the “pinça de filigrana,” or filigree tweezer and the torch, both crucial tools in filigree work. Her teaching style was clear and concise, and she moved seamlessly between demonstration and hands-on guidance. It’s inspiring to watch someone with such a keen understanding of the craft work so effortlessly, and she gave each student the right amount of attention.

In this jewelry making course, we began with the basics of filigree techniques, learning how to properly shape, solder, and arrange thin metal wires into cohesive, intricate patterns. One of the biggest challenges in Portuguese filigree is working with ultra-fine wire to form tiny spirals and coils. These elements are then joined together with powdered silver solder to create the signature lace-like effect that defines this jewelry style. It requires intense focus and patience, and seeing the intricate design come to life in each piece was incredibly rewarding.

Who Should Consider Taking a Filigree Jewelry Making Workshop?

Classes like these are ideal for artists with a basic understanding of metalsmithing concepts such as soldering and wire work. For more seasoned artists, a class in a specialized technique, such as filigree, can provide fresh inspiration and unique approaches to incorporate into one’s existing body of work.

Reflecting on the Experience

Reflecting on the weekend, I can confidently say that my time at 92Y was both productive and memorable. The instructor’s approach and the hands-on nature of the class helped build my confidence in working with fine metalwork and Portuguese filigree techniques. The commute might have been a bit of a challenge, but the experience was well worth the effort. For anyone interested in jewelry design classes or exploring a new facet of jewelry making courses, I highly recommend checking out the diverse offerings at 92Y.

Whether you’re looking to enhance your skills or dive into jewelry making as a fresh hobby, a jewelry making workshop in a vibrant studio setting is an experience that combines learning with the thrill of creation. Embracing the challenge of Portuguese filigree has added a layer of richness to my work and given me a greater appreciation for this historic art form.
